Jan. 10, 2021: “The Church’s Hidden Secret: Our (Tacit) Approval of White Supremacy”

  • The Rev. Dr. Riddick Weber, Associate Professor of Pastoral Ministry, Moravian Theological Seminary
Since the arrival of the first Africans in the English colonies that became the United States, the church has struggled with issues of slavery and race. The session will offer a historical overview of the church’s participation in the creation of the racist structures in American society, particularly in relationship to political and economic processes, and invite participants to consider how they can engage in dismantling them. Content for this session will draw heavily from Jemar Tisby’s The Color of Compromise. In preparation, participants might consider watching “The Cost of Racism to White America” on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=psnIvnzWNx4
